Serious Road Safety Risks

The proposed ABx bauxite mining project in Reedy Marsh presents serious road safety risks, particularly on Porters Bridge Road, which does not meet Local Government Association standards.

Safety Risks, Porters Bridge Road,

The road is too narrow and unsuitable for the volume of heavy traffic the mine would generate. ABx’s own Traffic Impact Assessment (TIA) underscores these concerns, forecasting an alarming increase in daily traffic—from 110 to 222 vehicles, including 78 additional 60-tonne trucks and dog trailer combination. This represents a 400% increase in heavy vehicle traffic, posing significant hazards. Suggestions that vehicles could drive on the verge to allow others to pass are unsafe and unsustainable.

Such a practice would not only risk road disintegration but also increase the likelihood of collisions. Existing infrastructure, including areas with limited Stopping Sight Distance (SSD), is simply inadequate to handle this load. A previous crash involving a truck and dog trailer is a testament to these dangers, as the driver swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle and ended up rolling into trees.

ABx’s proposed "solutions"—such as trimming vegetation and adding road markings—are insufficient to address these long-term safety risks. The lack of a comprehensive plan leaves the community vulnerable to road degradation and potential accidents. Furthermore, during consultation sessions, ABx shifted responsibility for road improvements to the local council, showing little accountability for the safety concerns they are creating.

Allowing this project to proceed without significant road infrastructure upgrades will endanger both the community and the environment. Robust measures are needed to ensure that the road network can support the increased traffic safely, without compromising public well-being.
